There are many local, non-profit organizations within the Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley constituency who provide invaluable services to our community.
In my previous life as an emergency room physician, I was unfamiliar with many of these important organizations. Since becoming the Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia-Headingley, I have met with representatives of these groups and truly appreciate the important role they play in many people’s lives.
In June, I hosted held an e-waste recycling drive and community barbecue with Equal Opportunities West. This organization offers an e-waste recycling program which provides persons with disabilities the opportunity to earn a living wage.
The response to this event from the community was overwhelmingly positive. My team and I often heard community members express their gratitude for the event and the opportunity to familiarize themselves with an organization that offered a service in the community they didn’t know existed.
This made me think: how many people in our community are also unfamiliar with these organizations whose services they could potentially benefit from? Community building is one of my goals as your Member of Parliament — to ensure that both individuals and organizations are in a position to provide ongoing support to one another. With the holiday season approaching, I thought this was the best time to hold an event that aims to do just that.
On Sat., Nov. 18, I will hold the Spirit of Giving, an event where the community can mix and mingle with numerous local organizations that provide invaluable services to our community. I encourage you to bring your family and friends and learn about the services these organizations have to offer.
Men’s Sheds Manitoba, You Can’t Spoil A Baby, the Military Family Resource Centre, Turning Leaf Community Services Inc., and Grant’s Old Mill are just some of the groups that are participating in this exciting community building event.
I invite you to join me at our Spirit of Giving event and meet representatives of organizations who assist with housing, seniors care, environmental advocacy, animal rescue, family resources, and military and veterans services.
Complimentary refreshments will be served and a jazz trio will perform. I also encourage you to bring a non-perishable food item in support of Winnipeg Harvest.
Spirit of Giving runs from noon until four p.m. on Sat., Nov. 18 at Sturgeon Heights Community Centre (210 Rita St.).
If you have any questions about the event, please call my office at 204-984-6432 or email us at doug.eyolfson@parl.gc.ca
