A new St. James lunch spot is dressing up the classic burger and fries.

St. James Burger & Chip Co. (1866 Ness Ave.) recently opened to booming business over their first couple of weeks. Owner Ravi Ramberran said he wasn’t expecting the huge turnout, and he’s hoping to hire more staff as soon as possible.

Ramberran owns businesses throughout Manitoba and said he’s been hoping to open a burger joint. When Pop’s Burgers put the spot up, he put an offer in right away.

“This place just looks like it would sell awesome burgers,” he said.

The menu offers burgers and fries (or chips, as they’re listed), hotdogs, sliders, chicken fingers and desserts. It might look like a standard selection, but Ramberran promises there’s nothing ordinary about the food.

“I knew I couldn’t compete with the fat boy shops, with the Burger Place or George’s. They have their market shares and if I step on their toes, they’ll just lower their prices,” he said. “I wanted to go a little more expensive, a little higher end product, everything homemade, everything super fresh — do a modern day version of those old school burger places.

“We have the fat boy but it looks different. It’s not the shredded lettuce, big crusty white bun. It’s a nice brioche bun and it’s more expensive.”

Ramberran has a chef working year-round, serving up the never-frozen Angus patties, as well as the secret ingredient fries.

“We’ve literally had customers come back, over a week and a half, three times,” Ramberran said. “The neighbourhood has been super awesome to us.”

Though not from the neighbourhood himself, Ramberran aimed has thrown plenty of St. James icons into the menu as well, with the 17 Wing Victory burger, the Post Flight Perogie burger and the Royal Canadian burger. The shop also donates 25 per cent of their tips to veterans.

“I don’t have a military background, but I was raised to support and shake hands with members of the military,” Ramberran said.
