Assiniboine CC gears up for busy month

The Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club (940 Vimy Rd.) will be seeing plenty of action on the ice in February.

From Feb. 5 to 7, the club will be hosting the provincial stick curling championships. Forty two-person teams (including male, female, junior and senior) will be representing their part of the province. One-hour games (six rocks per team) will be taking place Mon., Feb. 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. and on Tues., Feb. 6 and Wed., Feb. 7 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The winning team will represent Manitoba at the national competition in Edmonton in March 2018. The event is free of charge.

From Feb. 8 to 10, the AMCC will be hosting the national wheelchair training camp, which will see practices and games between Team Canada and Team USA, both of whom are competing in the 2018 Winter Paralympics.

Manitobans Dennis Thiessen and Jamie Anseeuw are joined by members from British Columbia, Ontario, and Saskatchewan to make up Team Canada. Thiessen is returning to the competition after winning a gold medal in the 2014 Paralymics.

“This will be a pretty high-profile event,” AMCC manager Paul Batchelor promised.

Games take place daily at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Free admission.

From Feb. 21 to 26, AMCC will be hosting the 50-plus provincial seniors championship. Sixteen mens and 11 womens teams will be representing all sports regions in the province and the top two teams will advance to nationals in Stratford, Ont. in March 2018.

A banquet will take place Wednesday evening with opening ceremonies on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Round robin games will be played Thursday to Sunday at 9 a.m., 12:30, 4 and 7:30 p.m. The Monday schedule is tentative and dependent on ties and game results, but games are currently set for 9 a.m., 12:30 and 4 p.m.

Admission for the full event is $20, daily tickets are $10 and single draws are $5.
