Adrien Sala wants to make sure every child has the opportunity to live a healthy life.

Sala is the Manitoba NDP candidate for the St. James constituency. He spent his early years working with at-risk youth, helping them find a life outside of gang violence.

While he managed the Just TV program at the Broadway Neighborhood Centre, he said he understood how important the school system was to keeping kids off the street.

Sala said residents are concerned about the school system, and how potential cuts might hurt their children’s education.

“Families are worried about the potential cuts coming to the school system. What do kids need to stay out of (crime)? A lot of that ties back to giving them access to education,” Sala said. “Giving them access to extracurricular programs … Without funding for those programs, you have kids who get lost in the cracks.”

Sala said he will also focus on the meth crisis, reducing the health care cuts put into place by the current Progressive Conservative government, and providing more support to the school system.

When he’s not running for office, he works as the director of strategy and operations with Assiniboine Credit Union. Before that, he also worked in the provincial department of Housing and Community Development.

“St James is a working-class community, and the NDP is a party for working-class families. I want to make sure we have representation for all of us, not just the people at the top,” Sala said.
