News in brief: Sargent Avenue Safeway closing, reopening as FreshCo store

FreshCo, a discount grocery chain owned by Sobeys, is opening four new locations in Manitoba.
Three of the new stores will be renovated Safeway locations. The Safeways on Sargent Avenue and Pembina Highway and at Niakwa Village in St. Vital will close for renovations in September. They will reopen as FreshCo stores in spring 2021.
According to a news release, the above locations will retain their pharmacies and continue serving customers during the changes.

The fourth location is the old Safeway store at Henderson and Bronx. That location has been closed since 2015 and will reopen as a FreshCo store in spring 2021.
Exact opening dates have not been confirmed yet.
The grocery chain operates two Winnipeg locations, one at Regent and Lagimodiere and one at Jefferson and McPhillips.

Cadillac Fairview rolls out new shopping app
Cadillac Fairview released a new shopping app on June 16.
The app, called LiVE by CF , will allow customers to safely plan their shopping trips to 19 CF-owned locations, including CF Polo Park in St. James.
The app is available now on iOS and Android devices.
Jose Ribau, executive vice president, Digital & Innovation, Cadillac Fairview, released a statement about the launch.
“The success of CF and our retail clients is inextricably linked and through a focus on digitizing the experience, we are committed to strengthening our relationships with our retail partners and helping them as they navigate this unprecedented time,” Ribau said.
Some of the app’s current functions include a mall directory complete with property-specific maps and icon-based navigation cues to help customers plan the most efficient shopping routes, access to COVID-19 safety information, up-to-date retailer hours and a search and tag function for products.
CF plans to add more functions to the app in the future.
