On Nov. 19, 2019, the second session of the 42nd Legislature opened with the reading of the Throne Speech by Chief Justice Richard Chartier, on behalf of Lieutenant-Governor Janice Filmon.
The Speech from the Throne is prepared by the premier and summarizes what the government in power expects to achieve during this session. As per our longstanding history: dignitaries; the military; provincial court judges; industry leaders; media; government representatives; the public and legislative representatives were invited by the lieutenant-governor to witness the Throne Speech.
Since the House adjourned on Oct. 10, I have been busy with Assiniboia constituency issues and my new duties in the Manitoba Legislative Assembly. I am pleased to announce that Premier Pallister has given me the role of legislative assistant in the Department of Finance and I am on the education finance committee with Portage la Prairie MLA Ian Wishart. I look forward to these new duties and opportunities.
As the MLA for Assiniboia I was honored to attend the Remembrance Day Service at ANAVETS Assiniboia Unit 283 with Kirkfield Park MLA Scott Fielding. It is so humbling to see our diverse community so well represented as we come together to remember our fallen soldiers. We are indebted to our Canadian veterans, past and present, for their commitment to the fight for our freedom, our democracy and our human rights. Thank you for your service.
For my first private member’s statement delivered to the Legislative Assembly as the MLA for Assiniboia, I spoke to the significant accomplishments of a local curling team. Team Kurz, out of the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club, won the gold medal representing Canada at the World Mixed Curling Championship recently held in Aberdeen, Scotland. No small feat as they first had to win at the provincial level and then the national level. Team Kurz was undefeated through this week long competition and beat Team Germany to win gold. Congratulations to Colin Kurz, Meghan Walter, Brendan Bilawka, Sara Oliver and coach Jim Waite. We are all so proud!
With the holiday season fast approaching, I would like to invite my constituents to attend our annual Christmas Open House on Sat., Dec. 14. The Manitoba Legislature is open to the public from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., please join us for festive performances from school choirs and historic tours. We hope to see you there!
