Many Charleswood voters will be familiar with Kevin Nichols, Green Party candidate in Roblin, as he’s previously run in federal, provincial and municipal elections.

“This is my fifth campaign,” said the 55-year-old safety technician who has lived in Charleswood for about 25 years.

Asked why he keeps trying to get elected to political office as a Green Party candidate, Nichols said, “People need a different option to choose from.”

He’s concerned about what he terms as the Manitoba Conservatives’ “gutting of the health care system”, adding that the recent changes to emergency rooms in Winnipeg hospitals leave people not knowing where to go for medical treatment.

“Health care should be government-run, not a private industry,” he said.

He said Manitoba has the opportunity to prosper from a green economy if provincial taxes are used to support its development.

While summertime isn’t the ideal time of year to be campaigning as many voters are on holiday, Nichols said he’s started door-knocking.

“I’ve been getting around.”

The RM of Headingley is now included in the Roblin constituency and Nichols said he believes he will be able to address issues there as well as in Charleswood.

Also running in Roblin are Progressive Conservative Party candidate Myrna Driedger and Michael Bazak for the Manitoba Liberal Party. An interview with NDP candidate Sophie Brandt Murenzi was requested but, at press time, she had not responded.
