On Nov. 27, the University of Winnipeg Students’ Association officially cut the ribbon on a new addition to the on-campus day care.
The facility now has capacity for 128 infants and preschoolers and has hired eight additional childhood educators. Seventy-five per cent of the new spots belong to kids whose parents attend or work at the University of Winnipeg, while the remaining spots have gone to the broader community.
President of the UWSA Laura Garinger says the project, which broke ground in July, was completed on time.

“Having childcare on campus allows students the opportunity to focus on their studies,” Garinger said. “We all have a part to play in making our post-secondary school system affordable, accessible and of the highest quality for all students.”
Minister of Families Scott Fielding attended the ribbon cutting and said that the provincial government supplies approximately $650,000 annually to facilities like the UWSA day care.
“This is about community organizations,” Fielding said.
