On Jan. 3 the City of Winnipeg announced a partnership with the Winnipeg School Division on a new project called Swimming Counts. The program will see 2,300 Grade 3 and 4 students from 59 schools in WSD take part in basic swimming survival skill classes. The program is meant as an introduction to water safety and is not meant to take the place of formal swimming classes.
“The Swimming Counts program is going to save lives by giving our students a basic level of survival skills when it comes to water,” Mark Wasyliw, member of the WSD board of trustees said. “I’m pleased that this partnership will make it possible for all youth to learn water safety at a young age.”
