With 250 episodes under his belt, Sam Thompson of the Witchpolice Radio podcast knows that there’s something special about live ones.
The St. James resident will be hosting a free live taping of the long-running music podcast on Oct. 1 at Torque Brewing Co. (830 King Edward St.) with guest host Ryan Sanders. While they have done live shows in the past, this one is a bit outside the box for Witchpolice.
“The main thing is you have three different musicians,” Thompson said. “Usually I focus on one artist per week, it’s a sit-down with that person but this is three people on and three people talking about each other’s songs, and what they’ve learned from them, and they’ll put their own spin on it, so it’s just more in one package than you’d normally get.”

The show is titled Mutual Appreciation Society and it features folksinger Nic Dyson, funk and shoegaze auteur JayWood, and indie rocker Laura Artus. The three will be chatting about music and song writing, as well as playing covers of each other’s songs.
“Having done this over so many episodes, I’ve talked to a lot of people about different kinds of music and it’s often very different from person to person, and what’s important when they’re writing,” Thompson said. “So this is to contrast all these people who have different backgrounds and what do they do the same and what’s not the same.”
Thompson says live shows are, to start, a very different process from the regular recorded podcasts that Witchpolice does.
“With an audience, it’s very different because it’s more putting on a show than doing a straight interview,” he said. “I’m still asking the same questions but it has to be entertaining.”
But based on past downloads, Thompson isn’t too worried about how another live show will do.
“People have been enjoying them. But being there in person is much better because you get to see it firsthand.”

Audience Q&A’s have been popular in the past, so Thompson says he plans on bringing it back for Mutual Appreciation.
