Tragically Hip concert to be screened at Assiniboine Park

The CBC broadcast of The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration will be aired live at Assiniboine Park’s Lyric Stage on Aug. 20.

The free live concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be projected via a 27 foot-wide LED screen.

“This concert will be a national celebration and we can’t think of a better way to watch Canada’s favourite band than in the Assiniboine Park with thousands of Manitoba Hip fans,” Kevin Hunter, senior director of marketing and community engagement, said in a statement. “The spirit of Assiniboine Park is about coming together to create memorable experiences with family, friends and community. Creating an event around this concert just feels like a natural fit for us.” 

More event details, including a full list of on-site food and beverage vendors, will be released closer to the event date. All ages are invited to attend.

Pan Am Pool temporarily closed

Grant Park’s Pan Am Pool will be closed for the rest of the summer for facility upgrades.

From July 25 to late September the pool will be going through renovations in anticipation of the upcoming 2017 Canada Summer Games.

The original 50-year-old bulkhead will be replaced with a new dual bulkhead system and interior renovations will be done to accommodate an improved lounge space in the public area at the front entrance and upgrades to the parking lot nearest the building.

Police seeking information about torched car

On July 14, Winnipeg fire crews responded to a call of a vehicle on fire along the train tracks at the rear of 566 Renfrew St. in River Heights. Firefighters discovered a yellow, two-door Chevrolet Cavalier engulfed in flames and extinguished the blaze.

Police have investigated and determined that the fire was arson. Anyone with information can call Crimestoppers at 204-786-TIPS.

Lyon Street fire not suspicious

Fire crews were called to a house fire in the 840 block of Lyon Street in Fort Garry on July 15 around 10 p.m.

One adult woman was transported to hospital in unstable condition. Her condition has since been upgraded to stable. The total damage has been estimated at $200,000 and while the cause of the fire is still under investigation, police said it does not appear to be suspicious.

Free outdoor movies at Memorial Park, Graham and Garry

Downtown will be a popular destination for movie lovers this summer.

Investors Group and the Downtown Winnipeg Business Improvement Zone (BIZ) are presenting “Downtown Cinema.” During the month of August, Memorial Park will be host to free movie screenings on a 40-foot big screen beneath the stars while the parking lot on Graham Avenue and Garry Street (beside The Pint) will be transformed into a drive in theatre.

“Investors Group is proud of our long-term relationship with the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and happy to support this family friendly initiative of theirs, “ Trevor Krahn, director of community affairs at Investors Group, said in a statement. “The Downtown Cinema is yet another great example of the BIZ’s creativity in bringing people from all walks of life together to enjoy our city’s downtown area.”

Titles screening at Memorial Park on Tuesday evenings include:
Aladdin (Aug. 2), Forrest Gump (Aug. 9),  E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Aug. 16), Big Hero 6 (Aug. 23), and a mystery movie to be revealed on social media for Aug. 30.

Snacks from nearby restaurants and food trucks will be available at each screening.

Movies start at sundown or around 9 p.m. In case of rain, the film will be screened on the following Wednesday.

Saturday evening screenings at the Downtown Drive-In include:
The Incredibles (Aug. 6),  Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (Aug. 13), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (Aug. 20),  and a mystery movie to be announced on social media for the week of Aug. 27.

In case of rain, the film screening will be cancelled.

National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation seeking Survivors Circle members

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) located at the University of Manitoba has put out a call for nominations for the Survivors Circle.

First Nations, Inuit and Métis organizations, groups, communities and individuals are invited to submit names to be considered for the circle.

“This is another important step in the development of the NCTR,” Ry Moran, director of the centre, said in a statement. “Ensuring we have strong survivor voices guiding the development of the centre is essential to our success.”

The Governing Circle of the NCTR will select members of the Survivors Circle.
