Actor/comedian Jason Alexander will be the main entertainer at the Jewish National Fund of Canada’s Negev Gala on June 4 at the Centennial Concert Hall.
The triple-threat actor, most famous for his role as George Costanza on Seinfeld, will put on a 75-minute variety show, said Rob Berkowits, executive director of the Jewish National Fund of Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
“We really want to go away a little bit from Israeli entertainment per se, which has a really specific demographic that may be interested in seeing it,” said Berkowits. “We’re going to a more mainstream level of entertainment.”
There were some hoops the JNF had to jump through to get Alexander, but in the end it was worth it, as he is also a spokesperson for One Voice.
One Voice is an American organization dedicated to ending Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Berkowits said the JNF did not know about the connection.
“I’d like to say it was completely planned, but I’d be lying to you,” said Berkowits. “We were just trying to widen the range of interest and demographic in the Negev Gala by securing a more high-profile celebrity-entertainment person as it would hopefully (help) attendance and support of the event. Which it has.”
