We Day 2013 just around the corner

The cause: As part of Free The Children’s year-long water initiative, help provide 100,000 people with access to clean water

The action: Take part in the We Create Change campaign where $25 in pennies provides one person with access to clean water for life!

The why: On Oct. 30, 2012, 32 junior high students from Bothwell School travelled to Winnipeg to take part in our second We Day Manitoba. We joined 18,000 students and educators from across the province to listen to Marc and Craig Kielburger and other world-renowned speakers and performers.

After returning, 15 junior high students started a group called IGNITE and mobilized quickly to take part in We Create Change, a campaign they learned about at We Day.

We challenged the entire school population at an assembly in early November to join the group in raising as many pennies as possible. 

Bothwell students ran with the challenge and brought in over $350; $250 from pennies alone and $100 from bake sales and other donations.

With these donations our students will provide 14 people in developing communities access to clean water for life. Building on our understanding of the importance of clean water, students were asked to make One Drop commitments about how they can conserve water. These pledges made the students more aware of their own water use at home and now line the hallways of our school as a daily reminder. 

Through Free The Children`s year-long service learning program, We Act, students and teachers across the province are taking action to make a difference in their local and global communities.
