Where you get your groceries in Winnipeg may be changing.

Before Sobeys Inc. can acquire grocer Safeway Canada, the Competition Bureau has ordered the company to shut down 23 stores in Western Canada. Sobeys has agreed and is closing five in Winnipeg.

One of the stores set to close early this month is the Grant Park Shopping Centre location (1120 Grant Ave.), and shoppers aren’t happy.

“I would be really disappointed if it did close because I use it a lot,” said Barbara Buick, of Grant Park, who comes to the store twice a week. “I’ve been coming for about three years, since I’ve moved into the area.”

“I don’t like it,” said Karen Court, also a Grant Park resident. “I’m not a big Sobeys shopper so I will miss it, but I hear they are amalgamating, so that will be interesting to see.”

Arthur Andus also lives in the area and comes to the same store often.

“I’m disappointed this one is closing, I’ve shopped here for years and years,” said Andus. “I know everybody, and they all know me.”
