Perimeter project to create jobs

Since I became MLA for St. Norbert, I have been working with the Department of Infrastructure and Emergency Measures to make sure our community continues to see great investments in our core infrastructure. 

One infrastructure project that is already halfway finished is the construction on the Perimeter Bridge over Pembina Highway, which will include wider sidewalks and upgraded lighting to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe. This newly announced investment will be another project with incredible benefits for our community.

I am excited to share news of another fantastic announcement for southwest Winnipeg. We are investing a record $200 million to improve sections of the Perimeter Highway.

We will upgrade the Perimeter Highway with new concrete and other improvements, but most importantly, we will build a new diamond exchange intersection at McGillivray. This will allow for faster unimpeded flow of traffic. The intention is to upgrade this whole section of the Perimeter Highway to meet Interstate standards.

Now while this is great news in itself, this project will also create over 2,200 full-time jobs. Creating good jobs is great news for our economy. Everyone from engineers, tradespeople, concrete workers and labourers will be working on this project.

This upgraded road will help alleviate traffic congestion in our neighbourhoods and down Pembina Highway. It will also allow truck traffic to flow freely to CentrePort, which is another critical investment for our economy.

Now is the time to invest in our area and in our future. Better infrastructure means we keep up our economy’s steady growth and keep investing in good jobs for families. We want to continue to keep our unemployment rate as one of the lowest in Canada.
