Canadian Fitness and Muay Thai Kick Boxing, also known as the CFC (Canadian Fighting Center) proudly claims that it is Winnipeg’s No. 1 martial arts training centre and I have a hard time disagreeing.

I have trained at several martial arts studios around the city and none compare to the level of the CFC.

Head trainer and owner Giuseppe DeNatale, who had a much decorated career as a professional fighter, is an excellent and extremely knowledgeable trainer who pushes students of all levels to perform to the best of their abilities as he stresses the great importance of proper fighting style and technique. He says his students are an extension of himself and he makes it a goal to be sure that all students train properly. The other trainers in the gym are also very knowledgeable and are an extension of Giuseppe.

The gym located at 349 Wardlaw Ave., at the corner of Wardlaw and Scott Street is a large facility, the floor is completely covered in soft mats (unlike several other martial arts gyms) and it boasts many heavy bags and equipment for all the kicking and punching you can dish out. There’s also a ring in the far corner of the gym for fight training.

In addition to different styles of boxing and kickboxing classes the gym also offers martial arts such as judo. The gym is also the host of the CFC (Canadian Fighting Championships), which take place at the RBC Convention Centre in September.

Beginners are taken through a one-on-one class to learn the basics and proper technique before they enter the regular class mix.

There are classes every evening, varying throughout the week and range from intro and beginner to advanced and women’s-only.

There’s an opportunity for all levels so kick yourself into shape for the summer, just in case summer comes along this year!
