Sachit Mehra has officially registered his candidacy for St. Norbert’s city council seat in the 2014 Winnipeg civic election.

On June 30, Mehra decided to celebrate his 16th anniversary with his wife, Caroline, by putting his name in the hat and entering the race.

“Sixteen years ago today, Caroline and I started to build our life together. We chose to make St. Norbert our home and raise our family here because it is such a diverse and dynamic community, rich in history and culture and fostering opportunity and growth,” Mehra said in a news release.

“Many people approached me, whether at my family’s restaurant (East India Company) or on the sidelines of my son’s football games, telling me that they wanted to see real change at city hall and ultimately, they encouraged me to put my name forward.”

Over the past seven years, East India Company’s annual fundraiser, The Masala Mixer, has raised more than $50,000 for several projects at the Victoria General Hospital. As well, Mehra and his wife helped create a daycare space at École Viscount Alexander and he actively serves as a director on the King’s Park Child Care board.
