A mix of Indian food staples and barbecue favourites has Warraich Meats going strong as the shop approaches its one-year anniversary.
Since opening up the first Warraich Meats franchise in Manitoba last November, Kawaljit Chhina and his wife, Gurjit, have been serving up specialty cuts of meat from their store at Unit 70, 2589 Pembina Hwy., near the University of Manitoba.
“This is the first franchise in Manitoba,” said Chhina.
“It’s an East Indian franchise and there has been nothing like it before in Winnipeg,” he added, crediting his wife with the idea to open the franchise.
“My wife loves cooking and she was interested in opening a food business,” he said. “She was the one in touch with Warraich to open a new location here. We knew it was a good name, especially in the East Indian community.”
Kawaljit and his wife have moved to Winnipeg 14 years ago from India. Prior to opening Warraich, Gurjit worked as an accountant while Kawaljit worked for Winnipeg Transit as a bus driver.
Warraich offers a wide variety of meats including chicken, fish, and halal meat, referring to the Muslim religious procedure for how an animal must be butchered before it is eaten.
“We have raw chicken, lamb, goat and fish and a variety of flavours,” Chhina said. “We also have cooked foods such as butter chicken, lamb curry, fish curry and more.”
Warraich also offers lunch specials each day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and given their location, Chhina says he sees a lot of traffic from the university crowd.
“We see a lot of people, from all walks of life,” said Chhina, who resides in South Pointe. “All of our food is cooked in-house, everything is fresh.
Customers can expect big things for Warraich’s one-year anniversary, including a customer appreciation day.
“First, we will be having big sales on everything,” Chhina said. “On Sat., Nov. 1 we will have a free barbecue. People can come and sample some of our specialty dishes.”
Chhina said he is fully capable of catering up to 1,000 people.
“We’ve done 500 before in the Muslim community serving halal food,” he said.
Warraich Meats is open seven days a week, including long weekends and civic holidays.
Warraich also offers delivery on orders over $30 and sells meats wholesale.
