The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s CowardFest is in full swing this week with a handful of shows happening in Winnipeg’s southwest.
Opening on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Forrest Nickerson Theatre, 285 Pembina Hwy., is Merlyn Productions’ take on The Astonished Heart. The play, directed by John Chase, is the only drama among the many comedies being presented at this year’s Master Playwright Festival.
“Representing the tragedy mask for a chiefly comical playwright, Merlyn Productions is especially pleased to bring dramatic contrast to this year’s festival, and offer patrons the opportunity to discover another side of Noël Coward,” Chase said in a release.
The production stars Mitch Krohn as Christian Faber; former Ontario actress and current 92 CITI FM announcer Nancy Slater making her Winnipeg stage debut as Barbara, his wife; and Winnipeg actress and lawyer Kalyn Bomback as Leonora Vail.
A Song at Twilight, presented by Dramatic Theatre and featuring local actors Kelley Hirst, Martin Wilson and Tony Porteous, opens at the Forrest Nickerson on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.
This Coward comedy tells the story of an author in his declining years caught between two women. The show runs two hours with an intermission.
RMTC’s CowardFest celebrates the life and works of Noël Coward, an English playwright who produced dozens of scripts over 60 years.
