Tandoor House expands to the southwest

A popular spot with diners in northwest Winnipeg seeking traditional Indian cuisine has opened just off of Pembina Highway.
Tandoor House first opened on Keewatin Street in Tyndall Park in 2006 and quickly gained popularity for its curry, sweets and samosas.
According to restaurant manager Jeet Uppal, demand for Tandoor House’s products reached far past the northwest quadrant of the city, prompting the family-run business to open a location to serve residents in the south.
“Our customers have been with us for years and years from the south side in the Linden Woods area and Sage Creek. They actually used to drive all the way to Keewatin and they would always complain, ‘Hey, why don’t you open up in the south?” Uppal explained.
Uppal and his father, Pawan, who live in the Maples, were eyeing the 137-seat restaurant at 1-675 Weatherdon Ave. for about three months before deciding the location was right for Tandoor House.
The previous tenant was Woody’s Bar-B-Q.
Tandoor House also has a location at 598 Ebby Ave. for catering and commissary services only.
Takeout orders are being handled by the Weatherdon location as well now that it is open.
The kitchen is headed by chef Dutt and chef Ashok, who prepare Pawan’s recipes for the lunch and dinner buffets and à la carte offerings.
They are also offering “Tandoori nights” featuring items from the Tandoor and specialty drinks on Fridays and Saturdays and in conjunction with sporting events.
Uppal says he is looking forward to introducing Tandoor House’s food to the community and introducing the Punjab culture to the area.
“We are trying to open up more locations and we are trying to get more feedback from our customers,” Uppal said. “This is a turning point for us.”
Tandoor House is open Sun. to Thurs. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Fri. and Sat. 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
