Pembina Trails School Division’s first school in 17 years now has a name: École South Pointe School.
The division made the announcement on June 12. The K-8 dual track facility is located at 615 Kirkbridge Dr. in the Waverley West neighbourhood of South Pointe.
Earlier this year the school division solicited names from the community and consulted with local historians and First Nations organizations before arriving at the name, officials said.
In February, the division put out a call for suggestions based on the following four criteria:
• The name of the street on which the school faces;
• The historical or current name of the district or community in which the school is located;
• A name symbolic of the unique program focus of the school in the case of specialized or alternative schools; or
• The name of a renowned person of historical significance to the Pembina Trails community, or whose contribution to society is recognized and valued.
“This is a brand-new community,” Tim Johnson, board of trustees chair, said in a statement. “We chose the name keeping in mind that our new school will be the first public building in the area. We feel we have the unique opportunity to lead this neighborhood’s identity through the school. Consulting with our community was an important part of the process.”
The school is scheduled to open for classes in September 2016.
