U of M athletic track upgraded for 2017 Canada Games

The track at University Stadium at the University of Manitoba will be upgraded to the tune of $2 million as part of the legacy investments of the 2017 Canada Summer Games.

The announcement was made on Sept. 24 though the project is currently underway.

“University Stadium is an important training and competition venue, and has provided the foundation for many thousands of Manitoba athletes to achieve their personal best in their chosen discipline over the past 48 years,” 2017 Canada Summer Games host society president and CEO Jeff Hnatiuk said in a statement.

“The upgrades to this venue were identified as a key component of the 2017 Canada Summer Games’ physical legacy, and will help developing athletes in Manitoba realize their fullest potential, as well as enhance our province’s capacity to host national and international competitions.”

Once the upgrades are complete, the track will be certified as an IAAF Class II track & field facility, of which there are only nine in all of Canada. The last time the track was resurfaced was in 17 years ago as part of the 1999 Pan Am Games.

The Canada Summer Games takes place in Winnipeg from July 28 to Aug. 13, 2017.
