New personal care home for St. Norbert

I have to admit this holiday season snuck up on me: I did all my shopping in the last week leading up to Christmas because I was so focused on working with my team to build a better St. Norbert. This season, we got so much done.

Two weeks before Christmas our government announced a new personal care home in St. Norbert.

The new facility will have 120 beds and will be the first PCH in Manitoba to be registered with the Center of Health Design. Rather than an apartment model, it will be designed as small cottages that house 12 residents each. Each resident will have their own suite with a full kitchen and bathroom.

There will be plenty of community space, with landscaped grounds for the summertime. This unique new model incorporates new research to provide a more meaningful quality of life for the residents. It will allow for greater independence, freedom of choice and the opportunity for residents to create their own daily routines.

This PCH is one of many new facilities which will be built in accordance with our five-year plan to serve Manitoba’s aging population. Our government knows that providing long-term care extends beyond just health needs. We will add capacity while ensuring quality specialized care is available for those who need it most.

Three weeks before Christmas we announced plans for the St. Norbert by-pass from the Perimeter.

This will be the single largest road construction project in Manitoba in over 50 years. The bypass will connect up with a new interchange at Waverley and Kenaston and will offer a high-speed link from the south Perimeter to Highway 75. By creating a bypass around St. Norbert we will have a more efficient flow of goods for the trucking industry and quieter, safer neighbourhoods for our families.

A month before Christmas we announced exciting new childcare additions in St. Norbert. The Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology and École Noël-Ritchot are getting 74 spaces, and the new school being constructed in South Pointe will have 114 spaces. Our plan to eliminate Manitoba’s childcare wait list means more than just building new facilities, it means putting daycares in our universities and colleges, training more Early Childhood Educators, and making childcare accessible and affordable for everyone.  

As the MLA for St. Norbert, my goal is to ensure that St. Norbert continues to grow bigger and stronger in 2016. I will work even harder to bring in smart investments that enrich our community.
