Tim Hague Jr. knows a thing or two about races.

The 26-year-old from St. Norbert and his father, Tim Sr., were the winners of the inaugural Amazing Race Canada in 2013. Now, Hague is challenging Winnipeggers to compete in a different, saucier kind of contest in support of Parkinson’s Canada.

Hague will host Winnipeg’s first Wingin’ It for Parkinson’s fundraiser on April 2 at the King’s Head Pub.

Supporting Parkinson’s research is a cause dear to Hague. His father was diagnosed with the disease at 46 years old.

“Parkinson’s disease is hard because there’s no cure — it never gets better,” Hague said. “A good day is when nothing happens and it doesn’t get worse.

“We want people with Parkinson’s to feel encouraged and that for one night they go to an event and see that people care about them and are willing to fight for them and people are willing to have fun with them,” he said.

The event will see teams of five participate in a wing eating and beer drinking relay. The top fundraisers take home pizza for a year from Santa Lucia Pizza Corydon and gift cards from Oak + Oar. The fastest eaters (the benchmark is five wings per 1:30) get their names on a trophy.

“We wanted to do something different that would bring a couple different generations together,” Hague explained. “We were thinking about it, and everybody loves wings and beer, so that’s where it all got started.”

Last year, Hague hosted this event in Fredericton while living in New Brunswick. The contest raised $7,000. The fundraising goal for the event is $20,000 with all the proceeds going to the foundation.

Teams of five pay a $125 registration fee to participate but are also encouraged to raise more money for the cause.

“We’re trying to encourage people to practise or warm up — yes we’re giving you an excuse to go out and have beer and wings,” Hague joked. “But go out and enjoy your community.”

Hague says a number of Winnipeg businesses have generously supported the fundraiser, with The King’s Head donating the venue and approximately 1,000 wings, and Half Pints Brewery donating nearly 800 ounces of beer. Local entertainment will also be on hand following the relay.

“It has turned into a night of celebrating everything great about Winnipeg,” Hague said. “We can be really proud of what we have here in Winnipeg and that people are more than happy to support what they deem a good cause.”
