Winnipeggers will be able to check-in to the town’s first Hilton Garden Inn in the summer of 2017.

Construction has officially begun on the six-storey, 127-room hotel which will be located at the northeast corner of the Seasons development in Tuxedo, a new commercial and retail sector at Kenaston Boulevard and Sterling Lyon Parkway which will also be home to Outlet Collection Winnipeg and an Audi dealership.

Darshan Kaila, a Tuxedo resident and the owner of SK Developments — which will develop and operate the new hotel — said the project is a dream come true.

“I’ve been in the hospitality business for the last 30 years and this was my dream to build this and I’ve been working on this for the last three, four years,” Kaila said.

The Kaila family has been involved with a number of other commercial and residential projects in the city, including Aspen Meadows condos and the Waterford Green neighbourhood in the northwest part of the city as well as the Ascent Condos in Fairfield Park.

However, the Hilton Garden Inn Winnipeg South is close to home and especially close to heart.

“This is the biggest project that I have been involved with by myself… It is a $35-million project by my family and it was a challenge, and I took the challenge and I’m here now,” he said.

The 86,565-square-foot hotel will feature a beer vendor (3,740 square-feet), indoor pool, full service restaurant, meeting rooms, and a patio. Within two years, developers also plan to add 44 more rooms to the hotel.

Kaila pictures the new Hilton as a destination hotel for the both visitors and locals coming to enjoy the retailers, restaurants and amenities in the Seasons development.

According to Scott Jocelyn, president of the Manitoba Hotel Association, building new hotels indicate that a city is on the right track. Once the hotel is operational, it will create about 150 jobs in the area in addition to the hundreds expected to be created with the opening of Outlet Collection Winnipeg and the thousands of tourists anticipated to visit the neighbourhood.

“When you get a development like this and all the exciting things that are going on here, the hotels will benefit, but there are so many other industries that will benefit from people coming into the province and the city,” Jocelyn said.

The new hospitality centre will be built by Thomas Design Builders and was designed by architect Ray Wan to include a Manitoba Tyndall stone and red brick facade.

City councillor Marty Morantz (Charleswood-Tuxedo-Whyte Ridge) said the Hilton Garden Inn Winnipeg South represents a significant accomplishment for the Kaila family and one that is also being celebrated at City Hall.

“I understand the sense of accomplishment for a small business family that you create something, to build your business and take something to the next level… it’s not gone unnoticed and is certainly appreciated at City Hall,” he said.
