The community at École Van Walleghem school celebrated the revitalization of a local park this month.
After years of work by the parent council and school administration, École Van Walleghem (1 Princemere Rd.) marked the end to a $110,000 playground revitalization with an annual school picnic and “Dance in the Park Party.”
The revitalization of the school grounds included the installation of a wood fibre play surface around the structure, a foot path for the community and school use that completes an 800-metre track, improved water drainage, a wheelchair accessible shade and rain structure, more trees, and an outdoor classroom.
The revitalization project was supported by the annual Linden Woods Fall Classic, an annual five- and 10-kilometre community run that has raised $150,000 for school and community projects since its inception.
“Over the years, our local businesses and private entrepreneurs consistently stepped up as sponsors for this event — without them we never could have accomplished this project,” Linden Woods Fall Classic director Wil Hedges said in a statement.
Funding for the project also came from the province of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg. The park, while used by the school, is officially city property and organizers say they want the improvements to benefit everyone who enjoys the park.
