Residential school history hosted at Harrow United Church

South Winnipeg KAIROS and Harrow United Church (955 Mulvey Ave.) are hosting an exhibit on the Brandon Indian Residential School this month.

The exhibit, titled Remembering the Children, is a project of the Assiniboine Presbytery of the United Church, Brandon University, and the Sioux Valley Dakota First Nation. It documents life at the residential school, which operated from 1885 to 1972.

Childhood arthritis awareness month marked with luncheon March 10

The Arthritis Society of Manitoba is putting a face to childhood arthritis this month.

The organization is marking Childhood Arthritis Month with a luncheon on March 10 at The Met from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will highlight the stories of eight Manitobans living with juvenile arthritis.

Donna Wills, regional manager of The Arthritis Society, said the youth have spent much of their lives dealing with the challenges of juvenile arthritis.

“Together, those years represent nearly a century of surgeries, of chronic pain, of needing walkers or wheelchairs, and medications. Arthritis takes a serious social, emotional and physical toll on a child and often presents challenges for the entire family. It affects 1,500 infants-young adults in Manitoba. There is no cure,” Wills said.

Assiniboine river walk closed temporarily

The City of Winnipeg has closed the river walk from the Osborne Bridge to the Main Street Bridge temporarily as river levels rise.

The path will be closed to pedestrian traffic and barricades have been installed indicating the walkway is closed, officials say.

Light standards along the Assiniboine River walk have also been temporarily removed to prevent potential damage from river ice during the spring break-up.

The city is reminding the public that there will be no lighting along the walk overnight.

The river walk will be reopened and light standards will be reinstalled when conditions allow.

Crosswalk coming to Beresford Avenue

The City of Winnipeg will be installing a crosswalk at Beresford Avenue across Osborne Street come fall.

The crosswalk will include overhead signs and flashing amber beacons to help pedestrians cross Osborne Street near Park Alleys.

The installation date is scheduled for September.
