South Pointe has had a great start to 2017 with the opening of a brand new school.
Many students transitioned from other area schools and apparently the move went seamlessly.
Mon., Jan. 9 was the first official day of classes at École South Pointe School, and students were welcomed to the new building to enjoy a taste of it. It is the 34th school in the Pembina Trails School Division.
Stacey Ashley, communications officer for PTSD, emailed the following media release:
“Jan. 9, 2017, marked the first official day of the new early learning to Grade 8 school at 615 Kirkbridge Dr. Our chair of the board, Julie Fisher, and senior administration team (were) at the school welcoming students, staff and families walking into South Pointe for the first time.
“The project was first announced in 2013. The development marks growth and investment in learning for the entire community. The $30-million school will have room for 800 students and truly is an innovative and beautiful learning space.
“The design reflects and promotes a philosophy based on four pillars — one school, one community; environmental stewardship; connections and connectedness; and learning/discovery. These pillars align with Pembina Trails’ vision, mission and values, as well as our belief in 21st century teaching and learning practices.”
Area residents got a chance to tour the unique school at an open house on Jan. 30.
Special guests included Ian Wishart, provincial minister of education and training, the Pembina Trails board of trustees and senior administration team, École South Pointe School staff, students and families.
The evening included student musical performances, guest speakers and a video highlighting the first week of classes.
It is an exciting time for parents and children in South Pointe and Waverley West. Little by little the area is developing into a well-functioning region of Winnipeg with some remarkable attributes.
