Every Tuesday for the last 23 years, Crescentwood resident Anne has been filling stomachs and creating smiles through her volunteer work at Agape Table.

Located at 175 Colony St., Agape Table offers a variety of emergency and low-cost meals and groceries to assist low-income residents of Winnipeg.

But Anne says that what is really offered is a place for people to come together as a community.

“There is plenty of food and smiles here,” she said. “This is a place where people’s basic needs can be met.”
“Although there are many people from all walks of life who volunteer, Anne is very important because we know we can count on her and others like her,” said Paula Havixbeck, special advisor to the board of directors of Agape Table.

“We have a very small staff and we rely on volunteers to make things run very smoothly.”

The organization’s mission is “to provide a community-based program, nourishing the body, mind, and spirit of our guests in a cost-effective and financially responsible manner.”

“Agape feeds breakfast to over 300 people every day, Monday to Friday,” Havixbeck said. “There is also a low-cost grocery store Tuesdays to Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All are welcome.”

Anne says she enjoys the volunteer work and meeting new people.

“Many needs are met here for the less fortunate and I plan to come here as long as I can,” she said.

Agape relies entirely on donations and volunteers.
