A “nob” is a person or place of higher standing or great wealth, even a place of higher ground.
This week I encourage you to visit the Nobside Cafe in the St. Norbert Hotel, 3540 Pembina Hwy.
This restaurant of higher standing — affectionately called “The Nob” — is a great little cafe that’s been a part of St. Norbert since LaVerendrye tramped through on his exploration trek.

Well, maybe it doesn’t go that far back but it’s as familiar to St. Norbert as the area history is to the residents in the community.
Until I moved to St. Norbert 10 years ago the cafe wasn’t even on my radar but now it’s become a great place for a good meal before going shopping on a Saturday afternoon.
Once inside the rather plain-looking entrance you find a cozy hometown cafe. The smells and the atmosphere bring back memories of my youth growing up in rural Manitoba. The waitresses are friendly and outgoing, treating all their customers like old friends with a good sense of humour and great smiles.
The menu offers a variety of items for lunch but if you’re a clubhouse sandwich lover they make one of the best this side of Portage and Main. The sandwich meal comes with homemade coleslaw, home-made, large cut French fries that aren’t grease-laden but light and seasoned with just the right amount of salt. Portions are large and because the food is all cooked to order, with nothing prepared ahead of time and warmed under lights, you just can’t not finish your meal.
If you’re an early morning shopper at the St. Norbert Farmer’s Market then wander a few hundred steps south to The Nobside for a breakfast so good you may have to come back again next week.
Their breakfast menu offers a variety of choices. Again, large portions of crispy hash browns, bacon and eggs cooked perfectly to your specifications.
This friendly little establishment isn’t open for dinner, so check their hours before you make the trip.
Be warned: you might just become one of their regulars. It’s one more thing in St. Norbert that makes it worth the trip.
