Cavalia returns to eager audience

The travelling equestrian and acrobatics production Odysseo by Cavalia is returning to Winnipeg.

The company announced it would return to the city this May and tickets went on sale Dec. 6. Over 5,000 tickets were sold within the first week, prompting the show to add two weeks of shows. The shows will run from May 12 to June 10, 2018.

“We look forward to returning to Winnipeg in 2018,” Normand Latourelle, founder and artistic director of Cavalia, said in a statement. “Your city was so wonderful and made us feel truly welcomed. Since our first visit in town in 2015, we have been travelling the U.S., playing in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Portland, San Jose, Chicago and Nashville to sold out crowds but no where else have we seen such unprecedented support.”

The production will once again be staged at Sterling Lyon Parkway and Kenaston Boulevard beneath a big top tent.

The new dates are on sale at www.cavalia.com and 1-866-999-8111, or through Ticketmaster. People who reserve seats online or by phone during the holiday season will receive up to a 15 per cent discount off ticket purchases, officials say.  

The Park Theatre hosts comedy showcase for the holidays

The popular Winnipeg Comedy Showcase is back for its 17th appearance at The Park Theatre.

The showcase, hosted by Jared Story, happens Fri., Dec. 22 and features comedians Ben Walker, Ashley Burdett, Mike Green, Angie St. Mars, Florence Spence, and sketch comedy troupe HUNKS.

Tickets are $10 in advance and are available at The Park Theatre, Music Trader, www.ticketfly.com and from any of the comics on the bill. Tickets are $15 at the door. Doors open at 8 p.m. for happy hour and the show starts at 9.

A handful of local performers will be taking to the stage over the holiday break in a family friendly folk-tale production.

Merlyn Productions is presenting Wind of A Thousand Tales by John Glore at the Forrest Nickerson Theatre (285 Pembina Hwy.) from Dec. 26 to 30.

The ensemble cast includes Fort Rouge’s Alison Kolisnyk and Crescentwood’s Daniel Gilmour, and the show is directed by John Chase.

Wind of A Thousand Tales tells folk stories from Mexico, Japan, and Europe as the protagonist Kimberly-Kay discovers a deeper sense of truth.

Show times are Dec. 26 at 1:30 p.m., Dec. 27 to Dec. 29 at 7 p.m., and Dec. 30 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 and reservations can be made at merlyn.biz or by calling 204-415-2714.

Lotto ticket, car thief nabbed in West End

A man who is alleged to have stolen an entire lottery display from a store in the 3000 block of Pembina Highway has been arrested by police.

On Sept. 25, a man cashed a fraudulent check at a business in the 400 block of Ellice Avenue. Two months later on Nov. 25, the same man entered a store in the 3000 block of Pembina Highway and stole nearly $5,000 worth of lottery tickets.

Following the theft, a grey Honda Civic and a number of licence plates associated with similar vehicles were stolen between Nov. 29 and Dec. 4.

On Dec. 4, police say the same man stole more lottery tickets from a business in the 3000 block of Portage Avenue worth about $1,200.

On Dec. 12, police located the stolen Honda Civic parked in the 400 block of Spence Street. Two suspects were arrested and taken into custody. Officers also found give grams of cocaine in the vehicle.

Ryan Jeron Smith, 35, is charged with possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of theft under $5,000, four counts of possession of property obtained by crime, and fraud under $5,000.

Danielle Marie Deboynton, 36, is charged with possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking, three counts of possession of property obtained by crime, and failure to comply with an undertaking.
