On Fri., Feb. 2 at 7 p.m., a fundraising social for Lord Roberts Community Centre will be held at The Park Theatre (698 Osborne St.), where a group called the Mulvey Street Maniacs will rock the joint.

“It will be an evening of music, dancing and drinks,” said Rae Eskritt, general manager of Lord Roberts C.C.
Eskritt and Angie Johnson, the club’s supervisor and hall rental co-ordinator are in charge of a silent auction at the social. They have received donations from the farmers’ market, local businesses and from parents of children who are in programs at LRCC. If you would like to donate something, call 204 452-9744 or email lordrobertscc@gmail.com.

All the proceeds minus the cost of this social will go to Lord Roberts.

“What fairy godmothers are doing all the work of organizing and running a social without taking a cent of the profits for themselves?” I wondered.

It turns that a group of guys known as ‘the Rougers’ visited Eskritt at LRCC last fall.

“This is what we do,” said Gary Wuirch, describing the fundraising socials, “and we would like to donate to Lord Roberts Community Centre.”

Wuirch was inspired to this level of giving after putting on a Grey Cup social at Dakota Collegiate, where he had previously coached football. That social gave him ideas about a few Fort Rouge landmarks.

A few years ago Wuirch and some other Rougers: Grant (Churchie) Churchill, Wade Cadger, Terry Orpin, Yussef Hawash and Ken Williams put on fundraisers at Churchill High School and Riverview Community Centre.

A lot of other Rougers supported these event and Wuirch created a Facebook page, We Are Rougers, which has become quite popular. “Everybody’s all fired up about the social at the Park,” he said.

Eskritt hopes to upgrade the youth lounge and to provide more free programming with the funds raised at the social.
