Winnipeg firefighters on Osborne held their 9th annual fundraising campaign to support Muscular Dystrophy Canada recently.

If you passed through Osborne Village between March 6 to 9 you probably noticed some of our brave firefighters camped out on the roof of Station No. 4 and out collecting donations during rush hour asking you to “fill the boot” with your cash and change. It was great to see so many people stopping by, honking, and donating to the cause.

Muscular dystrophy affects the ability to control your body, and for some it will be fatal. It often sets in when people are young, and in Canada today tens of thousands of people live with this disease. Research driven by passionate and dedicated scientists continues, and we all live in hope that soon we will have a cure. Until that day comes, I say thanks to the parents, family members, care takers and friends who support those in our community who live with this disease, so that we all get a shot at living life to the fullest.

Across Canada, more than 800 fire departments and associations raise over $3 million for muscular dystrophy every year. A special congratulations to our Winnipeg firefighters who broke their own record and raised $108,000. All these funds will stay right here in Manitoba and go toward research, equipment and support for those among us living with this disease. At the launch event for this year’s fundraising drive, I was moved by the presence of Cayden, a young man living with muscular dystrophy. He thanked the firefighters, reminding us all that we share the values of hard work, generosity, and dedication to one another no matter where we come from, or where we’re heading.

Thanks Cayden and the others present from Muscular Dystrophy Canada and thanks to the brave firefighters who keep us safe.  Connect with me at wab.kinew@yourmanitoba.ca, or call my office at 204-615-1922 and share your thoughts.
