Assiniboia community committee has approved plans for a new 127 spot surface parking lot, east of the Costco on Kenaston Common Drive.
According to documents submitted to the committee, Costco intends to develop a new lot adjacent to its McGillivray Boulevard location which will primarily serve employees of the wholesale supermarket.
Representatives of Costco told the committee the new parking lot will be developed as the first of a two-part project. The second phase of development will include the demolition of the existing gas bar on the north end of the property to make more room for vehicle parking. The gas station will eventually be rebuilt on the eastern parking lot.
The plans were approved with the condition that raised crosswalks connecting the eastern parking lot to the main site be included.

As the saying goes, it’s best to build your foundation on a rock.
An application to subdivide 50 Barnes Street — the current home of Grace Christian Church — into two lots for the construction of a 52-unit condominium complex was approved by Assiniboia community committee.
According to a City administrative report, the church building will remain on a newly created 60,113 square-foot-lot, and will continue to be used as a church and the property will not be rezoned.
The second lot, a total of 28,314-square-feet, will be home to the four-story condominium complex with a mix of one and two bedroom units under a residential multi-family large zoning district.
A total of 77 parking spaces will be provided for church use, wrapping around the building, while the residential development will have a total of 44 underground parking spaces and 19 surface level spots.
At the public hearing, no one appeared in opposition, or for information.
Rick Hofer, a member of the church, appeared in support of the application and told the committee he is also the general contractor on the project.
“We’re trying to raise money to do more mission work,” Hofer said, adding the church is part of the Hands of Hope initiative, which it founded in 2002. “We’ve probably delivered furniture for free to at least 55,000 households and we do very good work, but the church is always running behind just a smidge every year.
“This project will erase the debt. Right now we have about a $700,000 debt against the church, and we’re trying to raise hopefully around the $2 million mark to pay that off and do more mission work.”
