Thank you for entrusting me to represent you and your families in the Legislative Assembly.

I am privileged to be able to speak on your behalf. Thank you to the volunteers who worked hard to get me elected, and to those who came out to vote in September. I look forward to representing all of the people of Fort Garry and the diverse perspectives that we are lucky to have in our constituency.

Fort Garry is a riding in transition; 48 per cent of the population has moved into the riding within the last five years. The community is changing from one of Winnipeg’s original car suburbs to a vibrant, diverse and increasingly urban riding. I am determined to be a fierce advocate for our community, and to discuss how we can bring attention to the issues that matter to you.

As a former school trustee, I understand the issues facing families in the city. I am proud to have introduced the “Right to Participate” policy into the Winnipeg School Division so no child could be excluded from enrichment programs due to financial barriers. Removing obstacles and promoting equity is a value that I will continue to bolster in the Legislature.

In my role as critic for finance, I will be prioritizing the push for a $15 minimum wage. A person working a full-time job, making minimum wage should not have to choose between paying rent, and eating a proper meal. I plan to advocate for those who are working hard and are barely making ends meet; minimum wage should be a living wage.

As we look forward into the future, we also have an opportunity on Nov. 11 to honour those who have come before us. Remembrance Day is a time to pay our respects to the brave folks who have served, and who continue to serve for our nation. We are fortunate to live in a country where so many people are willing to make incredible sacrifices in order to be a Canadian or to defend Canadians. There will be a ceremony at the Fort Garry Legion at 1125 Pembina Hwy. beginning at 11 a.m. Arrive early for seating. I invite you all to attend.

I am pleased to announce that our office at 200-1383 Pembina Hwy. will be opening this week. Please feel free to get in touch with my office at mwasyliw@yourmanitoba.ca.
