Westland and Carbone award first culinary arts scholarship

The first culinary arts scholarship sponsored by local business Carbone Restaurant Brands was awarded on Nov. 6.

The scholarship through the Westland Foundation supports students from central Winnipeg attending Red River College’s Culinary Arts program.

The inaugural scholarship was awarded to Carmela Bianca Mayoralgo.

“Thanks for the scholarship that is helping me to pay for my student loan. This scholarship brings me closer to my goal of becoming a restaurant owner someday,” Mayoralgo said.

“As a local business, Carbone is not only playing an active role in keeping our economy strong but also making it sure that it supports our community’s education needs,” Tuxedo local Benjamin Nasberg, president and chief executive of Carbone, said.

According to officials, the Westland-Carbone Scholarship for Culinary Arts is a three-year partnership that provides a $1,000 scholarship for three qualified students accepted in the Red River College Culinary Arts program each year.

“Carbone’s scholarship is an important contribution to the growth of our scholarship program,” John Prystanski, president of the Westland Foundation, said. “We ask Winnipeg businesses to partner with us in supporting our broader mission, which is to provide full post-secondary scholarships to every inner-Winnipeg student.”

Carbone operates seven locations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan including Carbone Cafe Club, and the new franchise division, FAST FIRED.
