A St. Norbert resident has created a family-friendly driving tour of south Winnipeg, complete with audio narration and a trivia challenge built in.

Marc Penner was inspired by the amount of history and heritage that exists in the south end of Winnipeg. With the city in a code red lockdown, Penner wanted to come up with an activity that was safe during this very unusual holiday season overshadowed by the pandemic.

He created a 79-stop, two-to-four-hour long tour on the Tripvia Tour app which uses geo-fence technology at each location to activate the site narration.

According to Penner, the Sights of South Winnipeg is the only local Signature Tour on the Tripvia Tour roster.

“The tour will take you through the University of Manitoba, to four parks — one of which is an off-leash park — around St. Norbert, over to the Red River Floodway and much more. Stay in the car or go for a walk around at certain stops. This hybrid tour allows you to drive the route while the tour automatically narrates site details for you,” Penner said, adding this tour costs $8.99.

Some of the other sites include the Trappist Monastery ruins, St. Norbert Heritage Park, the Red River Floodway lookout, St. Norbert Church, Aisle Ritchot, King’s and La Barriere Park, plus Place St. Norbert.

Penner recorded the audio for the tour after doing a lot of research into all the sites, and included a flyover of the route in the package.

“You control the length of the tour with start and stop capabilities. Follow the map, listen to the audio and play trivia. Enjoy the Sights of South Winnipeg, as well as the massive amount of history right here in our own backyard,” he said. “Connect your device to your vehicle’s audio system, so the entire family can listen and discuss the site details.”
