The Canadian Goodwill store on Pembina Highway reopened on Jan. 30 after undergoing 10 months of renovation.
Last year, on March 26, a car accident caused one vehicle to crash into the front window of this Fort Garry store. Shortly after the driver was extracted from the car, it caught on fire, when then caused the building to go up in flames, said Charlotte McTavish with Canadian Goodwill.
“We had lots of soft goods — clothing and stuffed animals — in the display window at the front. They burned rapidly,” she said. “After the fire, we needed a new roof, and had to get the steel beams brought in for that. Then it rained late in the summer, which further delayed the construction.”
McIntosh said the store’s staff spent the past 10 months working at other Canadian Goodwill store locations, and are very happy to be home again.
“The community also has been waiting for us to reopen,” she said. “They’ve been dropping off donations and they were lined up at 9 a.m. the morning we opened the store for the first time.”
The Canadian Goodwill store will hold a grand reopening later in February or in March, with a ribbon cutting and cake celebration planned.
