On March 26 and 27, Acadia Junior High celebrated its second International Love Culture day.

According to Troy Scott, school principal, “Acadia is made up of students from 53 different countries, making us a mini-United Nations of sorts.”

Mrs. Rana led a group of dedicated students and teachers to plan a huge celebration of culture in the 675-student school.  The first day consisted of a panel discussion in which a multinational panel of high school students from Fort Richmond Collegiate answered questions regarding cultural traditions, stereotypes and racial issues.

In addition, an art installation/mosaic of over 600 tiles, previously made by students and staff, representing the United Nation’s Rights of a Child, was set-up in the school library for students to visit. There was also a Selfie Project which enabled students to create masks that represented and celebrated their individuality.

The second day featured more fun activities as classes visited four of 24 available morning workshops ranging from African drumming to bannock making.

An international-themed lunch was provided by Acadia staff and parent volunteers to the entire student body, followed by cultural performances and a fashion show in the gymnasium.

Troy Scott was full of gratitude: “At Acadia, we are very proud of our diversity and believe that sharing each other’s traditions and stories promotes understanding, acceptance and kindness. I wanted to thank the many community members, parents, staff, and students for their contributions towards making this event a huge success!”
