Fruitcake, peanut brittle and sugar cookies. Lemon meringue, apple pie and traditional shortbread.

Is your mouth watering yet? No? Then, how about cheese cake, macaroons, and red velvet cupcakes.

These are just a few of the many classic treats that you can find at Lilac Bakery, where owner Chris Atkinson prides himself on delivering a quality product that is reminiscent of both the ingredients and baking one could have found in many a home of yesteryear.

“Even my fruitcake is made using my grandmother’s recipe,” Chris says. “It is a nicely wrapped, one-pound loaf, filled with pineapple, raisins, and cherries.”

In need of a gift idea?  Consider a jar filled with your choice of delectable cookies — there are a variety of sizes available. And for those entertaining, Chris and his staff offer a catering menu highlighting options for trays filled with their most popular items. A holiday pre-order menu lists the seasonal choices.

Lilac Bakery is located at 920 Grosvenor Ave. More information, including the catering and holiday menus as well as opening hours, can be found at www.lilacbakery.com

It can also be found on Facebook and Instagram.

Taste is not limited to delicacies that indulge the palate; there are also those that appeal to the senses of sight and smell. Creations such as those found at Corydon Avenue’s Beyond Flowers do exactly that.

Beyond Flowers moved to Corydon four months ago from Lilac Street. In addition to gift and decor ideas, the shop draws on 20 years of experience to create arrangements for all occasions, including Christmas wreaths and seasonal outdoor pots.

According to co-owner Gloria Sawatzky, the natural look is trending and that is very apparent when you step into their cooler, where you will be assailed by scents of spruce, cedar and eucalyptus.

Gloria went on to say they strive to create with longevity in mind. An arrangement made in mid-November should easily last until Christmas.

Orders can take anywhere from one to two weeks, depending on the request. Having said that, Gloria said that Beyond Flowers does its best to accommodate special requests.

Their website is www.beyondflowers.ca and they can be followed on Facebook and Instagram.
