Caryk named WWHSHL’s Athlete of the Week

Steph Caryk, 17, of Glenlawn Collegiate is Winnipeg Women’s High School Hockey League Athlete of the Week ending in Jan. 31 for playing goalie for the St. John’s-Ravenscourt Eagles in the CTV Division A. 

Caryk was given the honour for stopping 45 shots and making big saves in a 6-5  Eagles victory over the Dakota Lancers.

Caryk said she enjoys playing, and beating, Dakota.

“A lot of the girls on the team, I’ve played with before,” the Grade 12 student said. “So there’s always sort of that friendly rivalry, wanting to beat them.”

Caryk has been playing goalie since she was 12, though she started playing at age nine. Eagles coach Melissa Comte said they had to hold tryouts for SJR’s goalie because they have none attending the school. She chose Caryk because of her high skill level and low number of rebounds.

“She’s a hard-working athletes and overall a great hockey player,” Comte said. “She’s pleasant to have on our hockey team and the girls really appreciate her hard work and dedication towards the team.”

Comte said Caryk also has a very positive attitude, something that can be tricky for goalies. Caryk’s advice to other goalies is to move on after a play doesn’t go their way.

“Being goalie is all in your head, as soon as you think you’re not there or not playing well is when you’ll let that goal in,” Caryk said. “Stop, think and make sure you make the next save instead. Because otherwise you’ll just beat yourself up.”
