Ashlyn Carriere is a 15-year-old volleyball player who is in Grade 10 at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé.
She plays a lot of volleyball — for the varsity high school team and for her club team, the Junior Bisons but she may well be best at the two-player, beach version of the sport.
Ashlyn and her partner, Anna Maidment, are the reigning Manitoba U17 beach volleyball champions (they also won the province in 2014) and recently returned from Toronto, where they competed to qualify for the FIVB world volleyball championships in Brazil.
“It was remarkable,” Ashlyn says of the Toronto tournament. “The facility was incredible. Meeting members of the national team was amazing.”
Ashlyn and Anna didn’t qualify for Brazil but learned a great deal during the process.
“I am very much so looking forward to the opportunity next year,” she says. “We now know what to expect and we will be better prepared.”
While there are fundamental differences between the indoor game and beach volleyball, Ashlyn enjoys both a great deal.
“I like how with indoor you have six people on the court and you have to connect to all six and work within the larger team aspect,” she explains. “Beach is fun because you get to play outdoors and on the sand. The sand is a little easier on your body and there are not as many injuries. I also love that I get to play beach with my teammate Anna.”
As Ashlyn continues to work hard and hone her craft, she has well-defined dreams on what she would like her volleyball future to be.
“I would like to play for the University of Manitoba Bisons women’s team, and I would like to play on a national team for beach.”
She also works hard in the classroom at school.
“My favourite class is science. I enjoy school,” she says. “I am on the honour roll right now.”
Ashlyn is very thankful for how dedicated her parents have been in helping her achieve her volleyball goals.
“I would like to thank my mom Kelly and dad Dennis for always picking me up whenever I fall down,” she says.“Thank you for always encouraging me. I would not be where I am without your love and support.”
