St. Mary’s Academy, Vincent Massey take cross country championships

Two local high schools were big winners at the provincial cross country championships.

On Oct. 19, teams from across Manitoba gathered at Kilcona-Harbourview Park for the final races of the varsity and junior varsity boys’ and girls’ cross country season.

St. Mary’s Academy won the AAAA varsity girls team competition with 21 points, followed by Kelvin High School with 44 points.

St. Mary’s athletes Casey Nelson and Sierra Sutherland finished second and third overall with times of 16:35 and 16:42, respectively.

Erin Valgardson of Kelvin finished first in 15:33.

Kelvin took the AAAA junior varsity girls team prize with 23 points, followed by Vincent Massey Collegiate with 35. Cecillia Howes, of Kelvin, finished first with a time of 11:11, with Massey’s MacKenzie Kreitz finishing second, in 11:43.

On the boys side, Vincent Massey’s varsity team won in a tie breaker with Kelvin, after both finished with 61 points.

Kelvin’s Connor McGovern was first overall with a time of 17:18.

Junior varsity boys teams from Kelvin and St. Paul’s came in third and fourth, respectively.

Baseball Manitoba recognizes outstanding contributions

Baseball Manitoba will hand out its annual awards to coaches and players who made a difference in this year’s season at its annual banquet on Nov. 19.

Jeff and Kerry Trager from Winnpeg South will be recognized as grassroots coaches of the Year; Juni Song will receive the award for peewee player of the year; Riley Nordman will be named youth umpire of the year; and Kevin Kozielic will receive the umpire award of merit.

The awards banquet begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Airport West in Winnipeg. Tickets are $65 through Baseball Manitoba.
