Churchill to host AAA volleyball provincials

On Dec. 1, 2 and 3, Collège Churchill High School will host all the games of the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association AAA girls provincial volleyball championship.  

A total of 10 teams will compete for the title from morning through evening on all the days. All games will be played in the Senior Gym at Collège Churchill High School (510 Hay St.).  

Daily passes for the tournament can be purchased at the school; admission for games on Thursday and Friday is $3 per day and Saturday’s admission fee is $5. Children 12 years and under get in free. A canteen will be open and tournament programs will be available for $1 each.

Games begin at 9 a.m. each day. The last game Thursday will start 4 p.m.; Friday’s last game will go at 8 p.m. and the championship final is set for 5 p.m. Saturday.  (All times are subject to change).

Tec Voc High School is also in on the festivities as it will host the opening ceremonies and athletes’ banquet at the end of the first day of competition — on Thurs., Dec. 1,  at 6 p.m. in the Tec Voc cafeteria at 1555 Wall St.  Teams are asked to arrive at Tec Voc by 5:45 p.m. and the dress code is semi-formal.  

Last years girls’ champions were the Dauphin Clippers.

This year’s pool of teams was almost set at press time: The Sanford Sabres, Churchill Bulldogs, Dauphin Clippers, Neelin Spartans, Stonewall Rams, Louis Riel Voyageurs, Landmark 96ers, Hapnot Kweens and Calvin Christian Eagles are all in the main pool as zone winners, while the St. Norbert Celtics and John Taylor Pipers will play for one last wildcard spot.
