Northeast rinks take part in junior women’s curling championship

Two rinks from northeast took to the ice at the Manitoba junior women’s curling championship last week.

Kristy Watling skipped a rink out of the East St. Paul Curling Club, while Meghan Walter represented Elmwood C.C. Both rinks competed in the Asham Express Red Group during round robin play.

Watling finished the round-robin atop the Red Group with an undefeated 7-0 record. Watling then went on to face Mackenzie Zacharias from Altona, the top rink from the Asham Black Group. Watling won the match 9-4, earning a bye to the finals on the afternoon on Jan. 6, where she will once again face Laura Butnyk. On Jan. 5, Watling and Butnyk battled it out before Watling eventually won 7-5 in an extra end.

Walter finished in fifth place in the Red Group, with a 3-4 record.

The winner of the Canola junior women’s championship earns a bearth to the Canadian junior championships in Victoria, B.C. taking place Jan. 21-29.
