Clippers command junior varsity basketball championship

The Kelvin High School junior varsity boys basketball team pushed through a close championship bracket to come out on top of the AAAA provincial tournament.

The Clippers beat the Garden City Collegiate Fighting Gophers 93-84 in the final at the University of Manitoba Investors Group Athletic Centre on March 14.

Grade 10 Kelvin forward Isaiah Letander was named tournament MVP while teammate Didi Deng, a Grade 10 guard was named to the all-star team.

The team is coached by Jermaine Mendez.

Gray Academy nets AAA JV basketball championship

The Gray Academy Raiders wrapped up the junior varsity boys basketball season with a new banner to hang in the gymnasium.

Coached by Jeremy Martin, the squad took home the AAA championship title on March 11 in Morden, Man.

The Raiders met the Collège Louis-Riel Voyageurs in the final of the provincial tournament after pushing through competitive playoff bracket that almost saw the team knocked out in the second round.

The final match up with the Voyageurs had the Raiders on edge until the final minute. The final score was a close 65-63 for the team from Tuxedo.

Raiders’ post Devin Cohen — who stands 6-1 in Grade 10 — was named tournament all-star. Grade 9 guard Aaron Thomas was named provincial tournament MVP.

Bisons lace up for CFL western, national combines

Manitoba was well represented at the 2017 CFL Western Regional Combine held in Regina, Sask. on March 23.

Nine University of Manitoba football players, including linebacker Bami Adewale, running back Alex Christie, offensive lineman Tom Clarkson, running back Cam Fox, linebacker Christian Turner, defensive back Akeeno Williams and wide receiver Derek Yachison participated in the event.

“This is a great opportunity for all the players to highlight their talents that can lead to be drafted at the 2017 CFL Draft in May,” Bisons head coach Brian Dobie said.

“These players have continued to show a strong work ethic during their preparations for the combines and our whole Bison football program wish them all the best in their pursuit to play in the CFL.”

The top performers from each regional combine were invited to the 2017 National CFL Combine held March 23 to 25, also in Regina.

Bison defensive lineman Evan Foster was invited to the national combine and Bison offensive lineman Geoff Gray was also invited but opted to instead hold a pro day workout for professional team coaches on Thurs., March 30 at the University of Manitoba.

Bisons right side hitter named athlete of the week

University of Manitoba student-athlete Devren Dear has been selected by the Bisons as male athlete of the week for March 19.

Dear, a right side hitter with the men’s volleyball team, earned 49 kills, 18 digs, six blocks, two aces and 55 points for the Bisons during the team’s effort at the U Sports Men’s Volleyball Championship.

The fifth year arts student played in all 11 sets and ended his Bison career with a team-high 20 kills and 22 points with seven digs and four total blocks in a 3-1 win over the Université Laval Rouge et Or in the consolation final.
