WSEU U12 wins Slurpee Cup

The boys on the Winnipeg South End United soccer club’s U12 Black team celebrated a recent win with a cold one.

The team won the Slurpee Cup (developmental category) on June 18, defeating the Bonivital Soccer Club, 4-0.

WSEU fielded seven other teams, with two of the club’s U9 boys teams facing each other in the final and the WSEU Red team coming out victorious. 

In the U9 girls category, WSEU Red defeated FC Northwest 3-0, while in the U11 boys final, WSEU White defeated FCNW 2-1.

Strikers earn gold at Players Tournament

The South Winnipeg Soccer Club’s U11 Strikers’ season-long effort has paid off.

The squad recently won the Boston Pizza Players Tournament on June 4, defeating Southdale 3-2 in the final.

Head coach Glenn Nanka said the team worked hard for two hours, on his birthday, to make for some of the most thrilling soccer he’s seen in 27 years of coaching.

“This team has worked hard all year since September playing soccer every week and practising two times a week,” Nanka said. “Every player has learned to work hard, show up on time for games and practices and you will achieve success. Try your best and make sure you have fun too.”

Bob Toth inducted to Manitoba Football Hall of Fame

Fort Garry’s Bob Toth has been recognized for decades of dedication to community football.

Toth was inducted into the Manitoba Football Hall of Fame at River Ridge Retirement Home on June 13.

Toth was an all-star football player with the Kelvin Clippers in the Winnipeg High School Football League in 1951 and 1952 who went on to play with the Weston Wildcats Junior football team where he averaged 14 yards per carry.   

Toth was an official for minor football leagues, worked as part of the support crew at Winnipeg Blue Bomber games, and also coached the North Kildonan Lions bantam football team to the city championship in 1964.

Tachinski named MHSAA Female Athlete of the Year

On June 28, Victoria Tachinski, a sprinter from Fort Garry and recent Vincent Massey Collegiate graduate, was selected as the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association’s female athlete of the year.

Tachinski, 18, participated in basketball, hockey, track and field, and cross country during her high school career.

She was a member of the provincial finalist team for AAAA basketball and was named provincial all-star and graduating all-star. She was also assistant captain of VMC’s hockey team and was nominated for the CTV Division MVP. As well, Tachinski holds the Canadian junior women’s record in both the 400 and 800-metre events. The MHSAA also named Tachinski the AAAA female athlete of the year.

She will attend Penn State University in the fall.
