Red Sox finish undefeated season on top

It’s been a landmark season for the U11 AA Bonivital Red Sox.

On July 5, the boys’ baseball team won the city championship against the North Winnipeg Marauders.

Then, on July 16, the Red Sox went undefeated in the provincial championshipm winning the final game 8-3 against the Boissevain Centennials.

Reflecting on the successes, Chris Miller — one of the team’s assistant coaches whose son, Nicholas, also plays on the team — said the season wasn’t just about winning, but the team’s “love for the game, passion and dedication to wanting to be the best they can be.”

In the city championship, Miller said, the players “showed their resilience and character, finding a way to come back from a six-run deficit in the bottom of the last inning to tie the game and then won the game on a walk-off by Luke Wagner in an extra inning to win the city championship.

“No matter how many runs we were down, they just never gave up.”

Miller said the team, which is comprised of 11- and 12-year-old boys from St. Vital and St. Boniface, finished the season with a perfect 27-0 record.

He said the thing that sticks out the most for him about the undefeated season is not actually the team’s record but its work ethic, the bond developed between teammates and their love for the game of baseball.

“It was a regular routine for the kids to show up 40 to 50 minutes before they were supposed to be at the diamond for warm up,” Miller said.
