U of M’s Justus Alleyn sinks Canada West basketball scoring title
Bison men’s basketball guard Justus Alleyn has earned the Canada West conference scoring title with an average of 24.1 points per game. He is currently fourth overall in scoring in U Sports.
Alleyn is the first Bison to land the title in the regular season since the U of M joined the conference in 2000.

Alleyn, 22, started all 20 Canada West regular season games for the Herd in his fifth year and has posted 35.6 minutes per game (third in Canada West). He also finished the regular season with a 42.3 3-point percentage and was tied in the conference for ninth with 1.9 steals per game.
He was named Bison Sports athlete of the week on Feb. 6.
Bisons win title at home meet
The University of Manitoba track and field team won its fourth consecutive home meet title earlier this month.
The team won the Bison Classic on Feb. 2 and 3 at the James Daly Fieldhouse with 310.5 points, ahead of second-place University of Alberta, which posted 255 points.
According to officials, the event included over 350 athletes from six universities including Lethbridge, Saskatchewan, Regina and Lakehead.
The top female results at the track include a first-place finish in triple jump by fifth-year Sasanie Wanigasekara with 11.62 metres, a first-place finish in the 300-metre dash by Tayo Babalola in 40.40 seconds, and a first-place result in shot put from Brooke-Lynn Boyd at 12.52 metres. Fifth-year runner Rebekah Sass finished first in the 600-metre race in a time of 1:35.62.
Fifth-year runner Abduselam Yussuf won the men’s 3,000 metres in a time of 8:53.12. The men’s and women’s 4 x 800-metre relay teams each finished first as well.
“It was a very good two days and I’m happy with overall efforts of both teams,” track and field head coach Claude Berube said. “I am excited for the rest of the season and for being the host of the 2018 Canada West Track and Field Championships in February.”
St. Paul’s grads to play Bisons football in 2018
Bisons football recently announced 12 new recruits to the program and St. Paul’s High School players and alumni helped fill out the class.
Stephen Adamopoulous, an 18-year-old defensive back; Samson Abbott, a 21-year-old grad and defensive lineman; and Collin Kornelson, an 18-year-old defensive lineman will all suit up for the Herd in the 2018-19 season.
Other players recruited to the Bisons include: offensive linemen Christian Krause, Tyson Thompson and Jeremy Williams; defensive backs Markos Bockru, Beck Fullerton, Manny Menegbo, and Robbie Lowes; linebacker Shaun Robinson; and defensive lineman Chris Larsen.
“We have had a strong recruiting class so far and happy to announce 12 more outstanding recruits for the 2018 season,” Bison football head coach Brian Dobie said.
“These players come from the junior football league and Manitoba high school league and are some of the very best of that class from across the country.
“We are honoured that these accomplished young men have chosen the University of Manitoba to pursue their academic and athletic goals.”
