Loewen wins Canada Winter Games Trials

A St. Vital-based curling team will represent the province at next season’s Canada Games.

Team Graham Loewen, which curls out of the St. Vital Curling Club, won the junior men’s category at the Winter Games trials held at Fort Rouge Curling Club from April 26 to 29.

The team is comprised of Loewen, Sean Flatt, Zack Bilawka, and Adam Flatt, and is coached by Tom Clasper. It will now represent Manitoba at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta., which will run from Feb. 15 to March 3, 2019.

Bonivital U17 boys win Sport Manitoba award

 
A local youth soccer team has picked up another accolade to celebrate a landmark championship win last year.

The Bonivital Flames U17 boys’ soccer team recently won the Calm Air Junior Team of the Year award at Sport Manitoba’s annual Night of Champions, presented by Manitoba Chicken Producers.

The award is in light of the southeast Winnipeg-based team’s 2017 Canadian championship victory in Fredericton, N.B., last October. During the tournament, the team posted an impressive 5-0 record and +17 goal difference.

Golf Hall of Fame deadline extended to May 31  

Individuals wishing make nominations for the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame & Museum now have a little longer.

Organizers say the deadline to make nominations for entry into hall this year has been extended to Thurs., May 31.

The selection committee, which is responsible for reviewing nominations and selecting inductees, is made up of representatives from Golf Manitoba, the Manitoba Professional Golfers Association, the Manitoba Golf Superintendents Association, and other stakeholders interested in preserving the heritage of the game in Manitoba.
